Common questions about video platforms

Do I need a server on site, or can it record in the cloud?

Either. Avigilon Unity Video records on a server at your site. Avigilon Alta Video records in the cloud with no server to maintain.

What is the difference between Avigilon Unity and Avigilon Alta?

Unity runs on your own server, so your video and access data stay in your building and under your IT team’s control. Alta runs in the cloud, with no server on site, automatic updates and management from anywhere. Which one fits mostly comes down to where you want your data.

Is there a yearly license fee?

Avigilon Alta is sold as a subscription. Avigilon Unity is a perpetual license, with plans available that enable major version updates.

Can I watch my cameras from my phone?

Yes. Both Avigilon Unity Video and Avigilon Alta Video have phone apps for live and recorded video.

What happens to recording if the internet goes down?

With Avigilon Unity Video nothing changes, because recording happens on the server at your site. With Avigilon Alta Video the cameras keep recording to their own storage and sync to the cloud when the connection returns. Cloud-native cameras will be unavailable for live dashboard views until the internet service recovers. You can still view video, but it requires logging in locally to the web interface of the specific camera you want to review.
